Summer Hiking Camp Learning Objectives
Monday (Day 1)
- Learn the proper clothes, gear, food and water needed to enjoy the wilderness safely
- The importance of notifying a friend or family member of your hiking plans
- Always be prepared to spend the night
- Practice Leave no trace principles and understand why
- Observe out how trail etiquette promotes safety and allows more people to enjoy nature
- Know how to go to the bathroom in the woods
Tuesday (Day 2)
- Learn about and identify local trees and plants
- Identify potential fire starting and shelter building materials
- Observe the local geology and identify possible hazards and resources
Wednesday (Day 3)
- The decision to spend the night
- Building a temporary shelter
- Gathering fire starting materials
- Securing potable water
- Wait for rescue or self-rescue
Thursday (Day 4)
- Learn to read a topographical map
- Discuss GPS & off-line maps on a phone
- Use a compass and follow a compass heading
- Complete an orienteering course
