Summer Hiking Camp Learning Objectives

Monday (Day 1)

  • Learn the proper clothes, gear, food and water needed to enjoy the wilderness safely
  • The importance of notifying a friend or family member of your hiking plans
  • Always be prepared to spend the night
  • Practice Leave no trace principles and understand why
  • Observe out how trail etiquette promotes safety and allows more people to enjoy nature
  • Know how to go to the bathroom in the woods

Tuesday (Day 2)

  • Learn about and identify local trees and plants
  • Identify potential fire starting and shelter building materials
  • Observe the local geology and identify possible hazards and resources

Wednesday (Day 3)

  • The decision to spend the night
  • Building a temporary shelter
  • Gathering fire starting materials
  • Securing potable water
  • Wait for rescue or self-rescue

Thursday (Day 4)

  • Learn to read a topographical map
  • Discuss GPS & off-line maps on a phone
  • Use a compass and follow a compass heading
  • Complete an orienteering course
